Cutting Disc vs Grinding Disc: Sizes, Safety and Choosing the Right Abrasive

Cutting and grinding discs fit the same angle grinder and do opposite jobs. Confusing them ruins work and risks a shattered disc.

Cutting discs

A cutting disc is thin, often 1–3 mm, and designed to cut through metal edge-on. Never grind with the face of a cutting disc: side loading a thin disc can shatter it. Use it only for straight cutting.

Grinding discs

A grinding disc is thick and built to take side pressure for material removal, dressing welds, deburring, shaping. It is not meant for cutting.

Safety and stock
