GI vs Stainless Steel Fasteners: Corrosion, Cost and Best Use Cases in the Gulf
Galvanised iron (GI) and stainless steel both resist corrosion, but in different ways and at different price points. Picking well saves money without risking failures.
Galvanised iron (GI)
GI fasteners are steel coated in zinc, which sacrifices itself to protect the steel. Cost-effective and fine for general and semi-exposed use, but the coating is a finite barrier that wears and can be breached, after which corrosion starts.
Stainless steel
Stainless resists corrosion through its own chromium-oxide layer, which self-repairs. It costs more but lasts far longer in aggressive conditions, and 316/A4 handles the coastal chlorides that eventually defeat GI.
