SS 304 vs SS 316 Fasteners: Which Grade Survives the UAE's Coastal Climate?

If you buy fasteners in the UAE, sooner or later you hit the 304-versus-316 decision. Both are austenitic stainless steels, both look identical in the box, and one costs noticeably more than the other. The difference matters most here precisely because of where we are: a coastline, high humidity, and salt in the air almost year-round.

The one difference that counts: molybdenum

SS 316 contains roughly 2–3% molybdenum that SS 304 does not. That molybdenum is what resists chloride attack, the pitting and crevice corrosion that salt drives. In a dry, indoor, inland setting, 304 performs beautifully and lasts for decades. Put that same 304 bolt within reach of sea spray, and chlorides find the weak points and start pitting.

SS 316 (and its high-strength A4 fastener grade) is the coastal and marine answer. It is the grade specified for anything exposed to the sea, to pool chemicals, or to persistent salt-laden humidity.

A simple rule of thumb for UAE projects

Use SS 304 (A2) for interior work, dry environments, and general fixing away from the coast. Use SS 316 (A4) near the water, in marine and jetty works, for facade and balustrade fixings on seafront towers, in swimming-pool areas, and anywhere a corrosion failure would be expensive or dangerous.

When in doubt near the coast, specify 316. The price premium is small next to the cost of replacing corroded fixings on a completed facade.

Buying the right grade

We stock both grades in hex bolts, nuts, washers, threaded bars, anchors and self-drilling screws, in all common metric sizes, at wholesale prices from our counter in Naif, Deira. If you send your BOQ we'll grade-match every line and flag anything that should be upgraded to 316 for its exposure.
